CLUB VOLUNTEERS

 “IT'S A FAMILY AFFAIR”

BMX racing is great fun to take part in and great fun to watch. But there's a lot of work involved in putting on a race. This can also be great fun, especially if there are plenty of volunteers to spread the load.

BMX is a relatively cheap sport to take part in. This is usually down to the fact that it is the riders families and friends that prepare the track and facilities. Normally the Moms and Dads, but we've got riders and race fans to help out as well.

We are very lucky as a club of course, to have some very experienced 'BMXers' to guide us, but whatever your talents, I'm sure that we could find a use for them, from promoting an event to pushing a broom on the track.

Some of the jobs that parents and riders can help us with are:

  • getting the track ready - sweeping loose rocks off the track, wetting the track etc.

  • track officials - need about 6 - 8 people on the track during practice and during the race to watch out for racing infractions and help riders who go down on the track.

  • first aid - a qualified first aider to take care of any injuries that may occur.

  • staging - one or two to organize the riders for the gate.

  • starter - operates the gate and starts the race.

  • finish line - two or 3 people who record the finish positions of the riders as they cross the finish line.

  • announcer - a person with a good speaking voice who calls out the race.

  • concession - usually two or three people in shifts so they can switch off with each other so they can go watch their kids race.

  • clean up - probably one of most important positions. everybody pitches in to put everything away at the end of the race.

So, whatever experience, skills or time you have to offer us, please don't be shy in coming forward, speak to anyone at the club and we'll be your 'friend' Hehe!
