Work Bee Alert - July 4

We do not have enough volunteers willing to do the menial jobs like raking dirt and picking rocks.   We have spent tens of thousands of dollars over the last year and a half to get the track to this point where all we need is the manpower to finish it. Brad and his crew spend way too much time fixing things from people walking up the sides of obstacles, kids climbing on corners, people doing things on the track that only create more work without coordinating with the track crew.  We, the executive would like to ask the help of all the parents in reinforcing with their riders, that there is no reason to be out on the track climbing on corners and obstacles, and we ask that parents out on the track please be cautious where you walk and try to avoid sides of obstacles.  These areas are very soft and quite easy to damage.  This weekend on Saturday from about 11:00 AM onward, we will be having a work bee to try to finish up the bit of track that needs grooming.  Again please bring your own rake out with you.  We will also be trying to re-shape one obstacle by hand so the more shovelers we can get out the better.  As an incentive to get more people out we will be raffling off a portable BBQ with free entries to everyone who does three hours volunteer work at this work bee.  There will be other jobs available other than shoveling and raking but those will be our main concern.

July 26, will be a club day at the track.  Training will be amalgamated into one session just for this one day.  Training will be from 2:00 to 3:30 for everyone.  At 4:00 we will be having a general meeting at the track.  We will also be holding a club BBQ at the same time.  The club will provide burgers and dogs, plates etc.  We ask families whose last name starts with letters A-M bring a small salad of some kind.  Families whose last name begins with L-Z bring a small desert of some kind.  Everyone please BYOB (Bring your own beverage)  Please be reminded the track is in a city park and consuming alcoholic beverages is against the law.

  •   July 8 will be the date to try the Ladies night again.  Hopefully Mother Nature will be a little more cooperative next time.  See Linda Pidhirney to sign up or for more info.

  •   Not to be out done July 13 will be a Men's Night.  Lets see if the men can out attend the ladies.  See Dave Duckering for info or to sign up.

Red Deer Members and Parents!!!

We still have quite a few spots open for volunteers for our provincial weekend.  For those of you who prefer not to work at a bingo, we will be crediting you with one bingo for every 5 or 6 hours you volunteer at this race.  We need people on Friday night, all day Saturday and Sunday.  There are about 60 positions open so a lot of you could kill your bingo commitment in one weekend.  If this is your plan please be sure to let Janice know when you sign up for a spot, otherwise your time will go towards your volunteer time.  Janice has the volunteer books with her every race day so check the list and see what is still available.

The following email message was sent to the Red Deer Club and we wanted to share the comments.

I would like to tell you that Keith had left his equipment in the garage in Airdrie when the Cools Camp was canceled. I left a message and was contacted immediately by two different people. They were both very helpful and we actually received the equipment via courier by Wednesday. So I wanted you to know thy went above and beyond to get his parcel here as quickly and painlessly as possible. So if you could perhaps post a thank you on the website. I would say their kindness really spoke for their organization.

Melanie Warren

Ladies Night is going to be held on Monday, June 29th at 6 pm.  Wendy Vanderhoven and Shelley Miller will be providing the training.  Anyone who can loan us Cruisers or safety equipment, it would be greatly appreciated.  Interested riders can sign up for the event at the track, call me at (403) 309-6961, or e-mail to confirm their attendance. All riders must wear long sleeved shirts, pants, and if they could bring a pair of gloves, and full faced helmet that would be great.

What a GREAT day!  The weather could not have been better:  What awesome parents we have with Red Deer BMX.  It was great to see you all again as we start the new 2009 season!  I would like to thank all parents who volunteered today, as it made the day run smoothly and safely.  Also you should be proud of our riders, they took their positions on seriously.  Let your kids know that they did make a difference in another child’s life today by introducing them to their sport.  Great Job Kids WE ARE PROUD OF YOU!

 I would like to thank a few committees;

Organizing Committee for the Day

Kurt Schultz, Dave Duckering, Janice Sekora, Angela Messervey, Glen Pratt

With the efforts of these folks long before the snow left the ground we were meeting and brainstorming on how the day should run.  The ideas from all put on paper and massaged into an effectively run schedule (that was easy to follow) was a great bonus in how this day ran.  I believe this group needs a round of applause and a huge thank you from our club for making this day run as smoothly as it did.

 Track Committee

Brad Milligan, Keith Harrison, and friends

I heard from many of the kids that the track was in great shape.  I was wondering (with all the snow we have had this spring) was the track going to be ready?  With a lot of hard work and time you guys did a great job… again!  Thank you for ensuring our track was ready and safe to ride. Hats off to all the people who made this happen (the earliest beginner’s clinic we have EVER had!).

 Concession

Linda Pidhirney, Vilma Pratt

Thank you ladies for ensuring the concession was stocked up for the day and having the hotdogs ready for the riders when they had worked up an appetite.

 Day Sponsor

Shantel Campbell of Royal Lepage Network Realty for donating the Hotdogs.  It is great to have a local business person sponsor our Club (that does not have a rider in it).  If you know Shantel please thank her, if you don’t know her, well all I can say is she is a great Realtor (who is also helping our club out with corporate sponsorship).

We had over 55 kids try out our track today.  I do know that we had many sign up.  So if you do see someone with a "deer in the head lights" look at our 1st race on Tuesday (you’ll recognize the look cause you probably looked the same way LOL) please ask them if they need help.  There are plenty of beginner packages in the registration shack to be passed out if they need them.

I am the fundraising and promotional director, so if you know of a business that may be interested in purchasing a sign they are $600 (for the larger sign) please have them speak to me.  Please note that as we are trying to entice people to purchase we are giving exclusive advertising rights to the business’s that purchase the signs.

Thank you all again for your volunteer efforts, I applaud you all for a job well done.

Regards,

Leann Riguidel

Hi to all,

The concession crew will be at the track on Sunday April 12, starting the clean up and getting ready for the season start up.  I will be there also with forms and information for those who would like to get a jump on the season.  If you plan to race the WNS race in Airdrie on the May long weekend then you need to get your stuff done and in now.  Just a reminder of how it works..........

1.  You will need to complete an Alberta Bicycle license application and waiver.  Then send it in with the appropriate amount  ($75 or $90) to them and your license will be delivered to your door.  If you are using bingo funds for the entire $150.00 then the club will send it in and it will come to our P.O. box and your license will get to you when the box is checked.  If a new rider has never held a license before, you will be required to submit a photocopy of the birth certificate.

2.  You will need to fill out a Red Deer BMX Membership application and submit the difference from $150.00 ($60 or $75) to Red Deer BMX along with three retainer cheques for $100.00 postdated for September 30, 2009.  It would be best to just bring a cheque book along with you as some of you have already fulfilled some or all of the requirements for the retainer cheques.  One cheque is returned once you have logged in 15 hours volunteer time.  This can be on the track, in the moto shed, at work bees, filling executive positions and duties, filling volunteer positions for the year, (First Aid, Head Track, Web Master, etc).  The other two cheques will be returned once you either volunteer at two bingos, get someone to do your two bingos for you, or bring in a sponsor who buys a full size sign to advertise at the track. (See Leann for details).

As has been stated in the past, we really do not want to cash your cheques, we just wish for people to get involved in their club.  Many hands make for light work.

If you would like to help out with track maintenance duties contact Brad Milligan.  He will be having lots for everyone to do this spring tweaking the track and making it even better than last year in the upcoming work bees.

We currently do not have a grounds director so if you would like to take that over get in touch with our president, Darcy Just, and let him know.  If you would like to just help out cutting the lawn and other related duties then let Darcy Just or the Vice President, Dean Best know that you are available  and access to the facility can be made available to you.

If you would like to help out in concession, get in touch with Vilma Pratt or Linda Pihirney.

If you have any valuable skills, (Electrician, Welder, Equipment operator, etc,)  let anyone on the executive know and we will find a way to utilize them.

Hope to see everyone real soon

Glen Pratt

The training session at the Exelta Gymnastics club was not very well attended, but it was to be expected with a long weekend upon us.  Our training director, Dave Duckering along with the junior coaches Josh Woolman and Tim Pratt were there as well as Cody, Landon and Owen.  Dave and his crew were impressed with the workout they got and already have plans to incorporate some of this into the regular club training.  In speaking with our instructor, Jean, after the session she said she had cleared her schedule so that we can go from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm.  This had been a concern with many families so I hope to see a lot more riders out next Friday.  Remember this is not only open to the riders but parents and siblings are more than welcome to join.  The first session included a bit of fun on the trampolines as well as a few somersaults and back flips into the foam pit.  Jean had said that she intended to mix both fun and exercise into these sessions.  If you are concerned as to the intensity, Josh Woolman still has his cast on and was able to max out in the exercises.

A reminder of the fees, $25.00 is payable by each person that attends for insurance coverage required by the Collicutt Center.  I think by now we all understand that issue.  Then after that it is $5.00 per person per session.  Judging by the feedback from just the first night, I will be talking to Jean to see if we could schedule three sessions in March and again in April.  I know that when we had Ken doing some winter training for us a couple of years ago, the riders that attended had a great advantage at the start of the season and in fact the year end award tally was probably one of the highest in a while.

So we hope to see a lot more of you out next Friday.  Please arrive a little early to get waivers signed and fees paid.  While the participants are doing their thing there is a coffee/snack bar there for spectators too.  And we also hope to see everyone out next Saturday for the meeting.

Hi to all,

Here are the results of the voting today (Sept. 21/08) at the AGM for new positions.

President                                   Darcy Just - 2 years
Vice President                          Dean Best - 1 year left in term
Treasurer                                   Linda Pidhirney 2 years
Secretary                                   Glen Pratt - 1 year left in term
Bingo/Casino                             Lynne Marshall - 1 year left in term
Training                                      Dave Duckering - 2 years
Moto Shed                                  Wayne Muttitt - 1 year left in term
Promotions/Fundraising           Leanne Riguidel - 2 years
Track                                           Brad Milligan - 1 year left in term
Groundskeeper                          Vacant.

All positions were appointed by acclamation.  The groundskeeper position will remain available for anyone to volunteer to take over.  If it remains vacant, it will be up to the president, as he sits on all committees, to arrange for a work bee whenever there is a need to have grounds work done.  Just so everyone knows, the responsibilities are basic grounds and fence maintenance.  Basically everything inside the fence except the track.  So if you can take this over or if a couple of people get together to do it, please get in touch with Darcy and let him know.

As your new secretary, (taking over the remaining year in the position) I will endeavor to have the minutes out to the general membership within the next week.  I will be contacting by email anyone who did not receive their year end award or top ten award to arrange a time to meet at the moto shed to do so.

I deeply thank all the people I have worked with in the last few years as they made my job a lot easier.  It has been a lot of fun and I have gotten to know a lot of you better in that time.  It is great when you can leave a position knowing your efforts have made a difference.  I will also be staying on as adviser to the new executive in addition to my role as secretary.

Talk to you all soon.

Glen

Red Deer Tourism guide for 2008

The Labor Day long weekend saw the culmination of the Western Canada National race series come to it's finale.  With 246 entrants all vying for the top spot and bragging rights, it was intense competition.  Unfortunately, Mother Nature decided not to cooperate and there had to be some major concessions made in the way the final weekend was run.  Saturday series race #9 went off without a hitch and proved to be a day full of speed and crashes.  Sunday's Grand finals results had to be taken from the Saturday race due to the amount of rain that fell in Calgary on the Saturday night.  So as it turned out Saturday's race was a triple points race and made for some interesting outcomes decided often by 10 or 20 points in some classes.  Special mention at this time to Abbey Graalman who crashed in Friday night's practice round and was sidelined for the rest of the year with a broken collar bone.  The results for Race #9 for the Red Deer riders are;

There will be no racing on Thursday, July 3, 2008. The start hill is being paved.

May 6, 2008

Hi to all,

Well we had a good turnout on Sunday and started getting the track in riding form.  A couple of kids have got a head start and tried out a couple of the obstacles and say they are pumped dot get on the whole track, but.......this weekend we will need a LOT of people out with rakes and shovels in order to get the track done in time for season opener.  We will be spending this week placing our topping around the track getting ready to smooth it out.  In talking to John Cools on Sunday before he left to go home he feels that if we get enough people out on Saturday to get the raking and smoothing done, the kids should be able to ride parts of the track on Sunday.  This will also help to pack the track down.  We will be getting a packer in this weekend to go over the track and I hope to spend the entire weekend rolling the track.  We are also in need of a couple of experienced bobcat operators to speed things up a bit when it comes to back blading and shaping and stuff.

The main crew that has been working on the track has done phenomenal work getting the track to this point but they are going racing on the long weekend so we need to push this weekend.  Also, John Cools will be leaving to join Samantha in China sometime this month so we will lose him too!  When all is said and done, we need to have the track pretty much finished this weekend or this years beginners clinic and start up may be delayed.

Bring out your own garden rakes when you come.  We have about 8 at the track but we need to have about 30 people out there this weekend to get it done.  There will be a few other jobs to do this weekend other than track but that will be up to the people in charge of those areas such as, registration, concession, moto shed director.  The garden will need weeding, tables placed and general cleanup but the focus will be on track.

So I hope to see a lot of you out this weekend.  I will have forms and racing info available at the track.

Glen

Hi to all,

The excitement is beginning to build!!!!!!!!!!

Sunday May 4, we would like to invite as many people out to help with the raking and shaping of the new track.  Brad, Keith and John Cools have done a tremendous amount of work today, (Saturday May 3) and we will be laying down our sifted topping ready to be shaped.  A packer will be rented next weekend to do the finishing and John suggests that we even start spraying the topping on.  Which means that if we get enough people out tomorrow and next weekend, we could be riding by the long weekend.  The track should be in by the end of tomorrow and ready for finishing next weekend.  Bring a rake with you if you're coming just in case there's not enough to go around, (I hope).

See you out there around noon on Sunday!!!!!!!!!

Glen

Hi to all,

This weekend, May 3 and 4 we will be finishing up the major part of the dirt moving so on Sunday we will be needing lots of hands to start raking and rock picking and smoothing the parts of the track that will be ready to be groomed.  We also need an electrician down at the track to do a couple of minor wiring fixes.  If you can help out with the electrical, let me know in case we need some supplies so I can arrange to have them there for the weekend.  We are also looking for the people that helped out with the fence the last time we did some.  We need to be putting fence up again and have to figure out supplies.  I will be at a bingo on Saturday afternoon but I will have a sign up sheet at the track.  Be sure to sign in and out to get credit for your volunteer hours.  I will also try to get a list together of what needs to be done.

See you all soon.

Glen

Hi to all,

It is that time of year again when we call the first official work bee for Saturday and Sunday April 12 and 13.  We will have a lot of equipment moving around down there so we are asking that this first weekend be for parents and older riders only.  Various duties will include,

Rock picking
root pulling
leveling the start gate
leveling the top end of staging
building and leveling the starters area
general grounds clean up
concession clean up and re-stocking
general moto shed clean up
possible shelf build in moto shed
manual labor on and around the track during building

We will be down there at around 11:00 AM both days.  Attendance at any work bee does count toward your 15 hours volunteer time.  Come out and see the new track take shape and be a part of the excitement.  For anyone who has not registered for 2008, all forms and information will be available.

Glen

See Photo page for pictures of the progress of rebuilding of the new track

There will be at least one more Camp Cools in Morley. This coming Saturday (March 8th) Ken will be holding a Camp Cools at the Morley Indoor. Airdrie BMX is footing the bill for this one so if you're a member of the Airdrie club then this clinic is free. Regular fees apply to all other riders ($20 for coaching or $25 for coaching + open track). Coaching begins at 10:00am with open track starting around noon and lasting until 3:00 or thereabouts

Hi to all,

Brad Milligan has asked if anyone has contacts with the concrete/building industry.  What he is looking for is about 30 to 45 of the concrete Lego blocks that we can use for building corners.  I am guessing this would be similar to what Cochrane bmx has done.  We would like to have them donated if at all possible.  With that donation we would welcome the donors business to be advertised on the blocks as much as they please to do.  Stenciling their corporate info or hopefully a real nice color picture of some kind.  We could even put their signs in the corners and name the corners for a major race for their donation, like calling the first corner the Inland Concrete corner, or something like that.

If anyone can help, get in touch with either myself or with Brad at rrbm34@telus.net

Thanks to all

Glen

This info is from Ken Cools

The first provincial race weekend of the year will be upon us in a few weekends. There will be no race held on the Saturday, rather just an open day for practice. I will be holding a training camp on the afternoon of this Saturday (Feb 16th) from 4:00pm to 7:00pm for a cost of $30 per rider. This will be the last opportunity to receive top end coaching on the track that we will be racing on, and this track is pretty technical.

I will have around 8 trainers who will be helping me with this camp so we will be splitting the group into 2. Allowing for the most amount of track time for the kids, and thus getting the best results. Like always the camp is open to all ages and skill levels and every level will be addressed.

For more info please contact me at kencools@shaw.ca or feel free to call me at 403-829-7561.

We will be having our first general members meeting on February 5th, at 7PM at the Red Deer Legion.  It is located on Bremner Avenue by Bower Mall.

As most of you may have heard, we are resigning from Cannery Row for doing bingos effective March 31, 2008.  Many issues brought about this decision such as the attitude of the hall toward volunteers, lack of communication, policies brought in by the board that we feel are detrimental to the fundraising ability of our group.  The decision that the board at Cannery Row were making were designed to make the business effective and did not take into account the effect these decisions have on the ability for the groups to generate revenue.  We are not the first group to give notice and it sounds like we won't be the last.   We have already talked to the other hall, and we are being welcomed with open arms.  For those who have done bingos at the Red Deer Bingo Center, I think you will agree that it is a more preferable place to volunteer when doing a bingo.

Just to re-iterate the new volunteer policy, as a part of your membership we are asking for you to do two bingos per family and volunteer for 15 hours, (Track, concession, work bee, etc.).  We are asking for three retainer cheques of $100.00 each to cover these commitments.  So if you are going to renew at the general meeting you need to bring all this with you.  If you are getting a license for the first time you will need to supply a photo copy of a birth certificate for each rider.

If anyone has anything they wish to be discussed please send it to me so I can add it to the agenda.  If you have a motion to make send it also.  It will go on the agenda, be seconded and then discussed and voted on.

I hope to see all the familiar faces there and looking forward to seeing new faces also.  Any question, do not hesitate to ask.

Everyone on the 2007 members list will be receiving this email.  If you do not plan to renew for 2008 and wish to be taken off my mailing list, please let me know.  Also if you wish to have a different email used, let me know.
